January 3rd - 5th

 Calendar

January 3rd - Return to school

January 9th - Mrs. Harle's birthday

January 15th - No School

What will we be learning next week?

Language Arts

Due to the short week when we get back, we will spend our days reviewing reading, writing, and spelling strategies.  We will use strategies to self-monitor and correct reading mistakes.

Reading at Home: Providing your child reading time each night, allows them the opportunity to practice their reading strategies and grow in fluency.  Reading books, being read to, and the Kids A-Z (raz kids) app are all great tools to use.

Math

Learners will practice skip counting by twos to 120.  Please practice this skill at home. Your child will also continue to generate word problems as well as continue to use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems.  They will practice solving word problems with the unknowns in all positions.

Math Activities to do with your child

Have your child tell you a story problem for a math equation.
For example,  ? -8 =12.   Rudolph had some carrots.  He ate 8 carrots.  Now he has 12 carrots.  How many carrots did Rudolph have in the beginning?  20 carrots.

Have your child tell you a double fact, a double plus one fact, a double minus one fact, and a fact he or she solved by counting on.  Have your amazing mathematician describe how each strategy works.

Give your child a number.  Let them tell you everything they know about that number.  For example,  My number is 62.  It is even, 10 more is 72, 10 less is 52, I see 6 tens and 2 ones, I also know 62 can be 5 tens and 12 ones, or 4 tens and 22 ones, etc..

Skip count by fives and twos with your child to 120.

Science

We will learn about a few new scientists as well as engineers.  We will discuss their purpose and the tools they use as engineers and scientists.

Social Studies

We will briefly touch on our new social studies unit which is our history unit.  The learners will begin to understand that everything that happens today has a connection to the past.

Weekly Announcements

  • Please don't forget to charge your child's iPad nightly.
  • As the weather turns colder, please make sure your child wears a jacket to school.  We will be going outside on cold days.  We will follow district protocol on when we need to have indoor recess because of temperatures (which is any temperature below 32 degrees).  Also, please write your child's name in the label of the jacket.  Lost and found gets full in the winter!
  • Thank you to everyone who donated canned food and toys to the Lion's Club.  We were able to donate a large amount of each to benefit families in Coppell!

Great Information To Know

    • We are noticing more learners are coming without fully charged iPads. Please make sure you're charging them every night AND sending the charger to school each day! Thank you for your help with this!
    • Please make sure to look at your child's daily behavior calendar.  Our goal is for the children to color in the day with the appropriate behavior.  Many times, the children forget.  If it is not colored, please assume it is a great day.  If you see a teacher comment, we would love for you to have a conversation with your child about what happened to receive the comment.  Please know many warnings were given before a comment was written. :-)
    • Please review and take out all papers from their take-home folder each day.

    Teacher Emails

The best way to get in touch with your teacher is by email.  Please email the teacher that can best answer the subject of your question. If it is a general question, please email your homeroom teacher.

    School Lunches

Every Friday families are allowed to eat lunch in the cafeteria

District guidelines limit lunchroom visitors at the elementary level to parents, immediate family members with written permission from a parent, and campus mentors. Immediate family members are defined as the student’s parents/step-parents, siblings, grandparents, or any person residing in the home. A parent can list the person(s) who have permission to have lunch for the entire school year.  If anyone other than the parent(s) listed as guardians in our district e-school system is eating with the child, we will need written documentation of your approval.

    Dismissal

If you change the way your child goes home at the end of the day, please email your teacher.  Children will be sent home their "usual" way unless we hear directly from a parent.  Also, please make sure that the teacher has responded to your email to ensure that we got the message.  If you don't hear back from your teacher, please call the office to let them know about dismissal changes.

    Birthday Treats

We will celebrate your child’s birthday with a spotlight on our daily school-wide announcements and a goody bag from the school that contains several items, including a coupon for a free treat in the cafeteria.

If you choose to send birthday food treats to school, they will need to be in their original packaging that lists the ingredients.  Please send the treats to our school nurse.  She will look over the ingredients and then deliver them to your child's homeroom class.  These treats will be sent home with the learners at the end of the day for them to enjoy at home.

    Volunteering

If you think you would like to volunteer at TCE this year, please fill out the volunteer background check.  The sooner the better!  You can find information about how to fill out the form and the actual form on our TCE webpage. This needs to be done each. year.  You will need a background check to help in the classroom, field trips, field day, etc.

    Language Arts

Reading/Writing:  We have a busy week planned with some special holiday activities.

Phonics/Grammar: We will not have a new spelling rule next week.  We will review spelling rules previously learned.

Unit 2 SNAP Words: big, eat, make, take, have, out, came, same, home, more, not, of, put, your, I'm, into, little, now, three, if, or, read.   **Your child should be able to read all of these words "in a snap".  If your child is having difficulty reading these, please help at home by making flashcards and going over them daily.  Your child will be assessed on these words for our next report card.

Reading at Home: Providing your child reading time each night, allows them the opportunity to practice their reading strategies and grow in fluency.  Reading books, being read to, and the Kids A-Z (raz kids) app are all great tools to use.

    Math

Learners will continue to collect, sort, and organize data in three categories using models/representations such as tally marks and T-charts.  Learners will also continue to write and solve their own action word problems with the unknowns in any position as well as continue to work on how to solve action word problems (addition or subtraction with unknowns in any position)

Math Activities to do with your child

Have your child tell you a story problem for a math equation.

    Science

We will continue to identify and describe a variety of natural sources of water including streams, lakes, and oceans.

    Social Studies

We will finish up our customs/traditions presentations.  We are enjoying listening to our friends present their culture/tradition!  It is so much fun listening to different celebrations that each family has.  This is one of our favorite units!

    Weekly Announcements

    • Please don't forget to charge your child's iPad nightly.
    • Next Friday is a 1/2 day.  Learners will dismiss at 12:30.
First grade will be doing a service project!  Please see below for information and keep those canned goods and toys coming in!!

Each year the Lions Club of Coppell provides holiday baskets and toys to families in the Coppell ISD attendance area. Last year the Lion's Club provided a special Christmas for over 130 families and hundreds of children who might otherwise have gone without.

The food baskets and toys are delivered by members of the Lions Club, and the identity of the recipients are kept confidential.  If your family would benefit from a holiday basket and toys from the Lions Club, please complete the form at the link below and return it to TCE's counselor, Kelly Matlock, by Friday, December 8th.  Email kmatlock@coppellisd.com if you would like a paper copy sent home.
