What will we be learning next week?

Language Arts

  • Reading - We will continue to use strategies to self monitor and correct reading mistakes as they arise. We will also be talking about author's purpose.  After reading or listening to a book, we can determine if the author's purpose for writing the book was to entertain, to inform, or to persuade.
  • Writing - We will continue to use our writing strategies to write fictional stories.  Our creativity is really coming out with these writing pieces!  We write these stories in our writing journals and we can't wait to show you them at Open House in March!
  • Phonics and Grammar - Next week we will talk about two more ways to make the long /o sound.  We will look at the /oa/ vowel team and /ow/ to make the long /o/ sound.  We will notice that the /oa/ vowel team is usually found in the middle of a word.   We will also working on adjectives and breaking apart words into syllables.
Math

Learners will practice adding a multiple of 10 with a 1-digit number.  We will practice skip counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's to 120.  We will continue to decompose and compose numbers to 120 in more than one way.

Math Activities to do with your child

Have your child tell you a story problem for a math equation.
For example,  ? -8 =12.   Rudolph had some carrots.  He ate 8 carrots.  Now he has 12 carrots.  How many carrots did Rudolph have in the beginning?  20 carrots.

Have your child tell you a double fact, a double plus one fact, a double minus one fact, and a fact he or she solved by counting on.  Have your amazing mathematician describe how each strategy works.

Give your child a number.  Let them tell you everything they know about that number.  For example,  My number is 62.  It is even, 10 more is 72, 10 less is 52, I see 6 tens and 2 ones, I also know 62 can be 5 tens and 12 ones, or 4 tens and 22 ones, etc..

Skip count by fives and twos with your child to 120.

Science

We will observe and record changes in the appearance of objects in the sky such as the Moon, stars, and sun.

Social Studies

We will continue to look at history while we talk about Martin Luther King and how he changed the world that we live in today.

Weekly Announcements

  • At the end of the last grading period, we noticed that many learners are coming to school with iPads that are not fully charged.  Please don't forget to charge your child's iPad nightly.
  • As the weather turns colder, please make sure your child wears a jacket to school.  We will be going outside on cold days.  We will follow district protocol on when we need to have indoor recess because of temperatures . Also, please write your child's name in the label of the jacket.  Lost and Found gets full in the winter!
  • Don't forget to send a quick snack with your child each day.  We all get pretty hungry in the afternoon.
  • Report cards were sent electronically last Friday.  If you didn't get it, please let the office know.

Great Information To Know

    • Please make sure to look at your child's daily behavior calendar.  Our goal is for the children to color in the day with the appropriate behavior.  Many times, the children forget.  If it is not colored, please assume it is a great day.  If you see a teacher comment, we would love for you to have a conversation with your child about what happened to receive the comment.  Please know many warnings were given before a comment was written. :-)
    • Please review and take out all papers from their take-home folder each day.

    Teacher Emails

The best way to get in touch with your teacher is by email.  Please email the teacher that can best answer the subject of your question. If it is a general question, please email your homeroom teacher.

    School Lunches

Every Friday families are allowed to eat lunch in the cafeteria

District guidelines limit lunchroom visitors at the elementary level to parents, immediate family members with written permission from a parent, and campus mentors. Immediate family members are defined as the student’s parents/step-parents, siblings, grandparents, or any person residing in the home. A parent can list the person(s) who have permission to have lunch for the entire school year.  If anyone other than the parent(s) listed as guardians in our district e-school system is eating with the child, we will need written documentation of your approval.

    Dismissal

If you change the way your child goes home at the end of the day, please email your teacher.  Children will be sent home their "usual" way unless we hear directly from a parent.  Also, please make sure that the teacher has responded to your email to ensure that we got the message.  If you don't hear back from your teacher, please call the office to let them know about dismissal changes.

    Birthday Treats

We will celebrate your child’s birthday with a spotlight on our daily school-wide announcements and a goody bag from the school that contains several items, including a coupon for a free treat in the cafeteria.

If you choose to send birthday food treats to school, they will need to be in their original packaging that lists the ingredients.  Please send the treats to our school nurse.  She will look over the ingredients and then deliver them to your child's homeroom class.  These treats will be sent home with the learners at the end of the day for them to enjoy at home.

    Volunteering

If you think you would like to volunteer at TCE this year, please fill out the volunteer background check.  The sooner the better!  You can find information about how to fill out the form and the actual form on our TCE webpage. This needs to be done each. year.  You will need a background check to help in the classroom, field trips, field day, etc.
