What will we be learning next week?

Language Arts

Reading:    Next week we will continue working on how to correct our mistakes when reading.  We are using strategies to help us solve tricky words when we read.

SNAP Words for 1st Grading Period- his, said, saw, say, then, they, but, let, run, us, yes, here, went

Writing:    We will continue our narrative unit.  We are becoming experts in topic sentences and closing sentences.  We are also learning how transition words can help move a story along in sequential order.

Phonics:   Our spelling rule will be the short /u/ sound. Thank you for having those spelling conversations at home!  The more we talk about spelling, the better spellers we will be!  We are already seeing a difference in how our first graders think about the sounds/phonemes in words and how to break a word apart in order to spell it.

Math

We will practice counting to 120 by tens and ones.  We will continue to represent numbers in expanded form, word form, and base ten blocks.  We will begin learning addition and subtraction strategies to help us remember our facts.

Math Activities to do with your child:

  • Please count with your child daily from any given number. :-) Your child has been working on counting to 120 by tens.  Let them show you!  :-)
  • skip count by tens /skip count by tens from any given number up to 120 or beyond.
  • Have your child pick a two-digit number less than 20 and have them tell you what is 10 more or 10 less.  For those of you who want a challenge, have them pick a two-digit number greater than 20.  Have a discussion with your child.  Here are some questions you can ask. What is one more and one less?  Is it even or odd?  How many tens does your number have?  Can you tell me the expanded form?  What digit is in the one place, etc.

Fun videos to watch with your child:

Science
This week in science, we will be looking at different liquids and observing their properties.  We will be using some new vocabulary such as transparent, translucent, opaque, and viscous to help us describe these liquids.

Social Studies

Next week we will begin our 5 week unit on government.  We will begin by talking about American symbols and what the symbols represent.  We will learn how to do research to find needed information.

Weekly Announcements

  • Please don't forget to charge your child's iPad nightly.  We do not have chargers at school to charge numerous iPads.  Thanks!

Great Information To Know

    • Please remember to send your child's Ipad to school every day.  Also, please make sure that it is charged every evening.  Thank you!!
    • Please make sure to look at your child's daily behavior calendar.  Our goal is for the children to color in the day with the appropriate behavior.  Many times, the children forget.  If it is not colored, please assume it is a great day.  If you see a teacher comment, we would love for you to have a conversation with your child about what happened to receive the comment.  Please know many warnings were given before a comment was written. :-)
    • Please review and take out all papers from their take-home folder each day.

    Teacher Emails

The best way to get in touch with your teacher is by email.  Please email the teacher that can best answer the subject of your question. If it is a general question, please email your homeroom teacher.

    School Lunches

Who can visit my child for lunch?

Starting October 13thevery Friday families are allowed to eat lunch in the cafeteria

District guidelines limit lunchroom visitors at the elementary level to parents, immediate family members with written permission from a parent, and campus mentors. Immediate family members are defined as the student’s parents/step-parents, siblings, grandparents, or any person residing in the home. A parent can list the person(s) who have permission to have lunch for the entire school year.  If anyone other than the parent(s) listed as guardians in our district e-school system is eating with the child, we will need written documentation of your approval.

    Dismissal

If you change the way your child goes home at the end of the day, please email your teacher.  Children will be sent home their "usual" way unless we hear directly from a parent.  Also, please make sure that the teacher has responded to your email to ensure that we got the message.  If you don't hear back from your teacher, please call the office to let them know about dismissal changes.

    Birthday Treats

We will celebrate your child’s birthday with a spotlight on our daily school-wide announcements and a goody bag from the school that contains several items, including a coupon for a free treat in the cafeteria.

If you choose to send birthday food treats to school, they will need to be in their original packaging that lists the ingredients.  Please send the treats to our school nurse.  She will look over the ingredients and then deliver them to your child's homeroom class.  These treats will be sent home with the learners at the end of the day for them to enjoy at home.

    Volunteering

If you think you would like to volunteer at TCE this year, please fill out the volunteer background check.  The sooner the better!  You can find information about how to fill out the form and the actual form on our TCE webpage. This needs to be done each. year.  You will need a background check to help in the classroom, field trips, field day, etc.

Way to go girls!  I was so impressed with how well you understand your numbers!  " I know that 38 is 30 more than 8..because 38 has 8 ones but 3 more tens!"

Way to go boys!   I am so proud of you for telling me what the missing numbers are and explaining why!  " Mrs. Sork 65 is missing because it is 10 more than 55 and 69 is missing because it is one less than 70!" You are amazing mathematicians!

I loved hearing your math conversations!  "  I have 36, that's 10 more than 26...so it goes here."  Y'all rock!

    Amazing Team Work!

    Way to shine bright!
