1C  & 1D: Wednesday

What will we be learning next week?

Language Arts

Reading:    We will continue with our first group of first grade sight words.  We will also begin to talk about how we can have conversations about the books we read. Looking at the pictures and stopping to talk about every couple of pages of a book helps us with comprehension of the material we just read.

SNAP Words for 1st Grading Period- his, said, saw, say, then, they, but, let, run, us, yes, here, went

Writing:    We will continue our narrative unit.  We are learning to write a sequential story about one small moment of time.  We will also talk about the use of different ending punctuation (periods, question marks, and exclamation marks)

Phonics:   Our spelling rule will be the short /o/ sound. Thank you for having those spelling conversations at home! The more we talk about spelling, the better spellers we will be!

Math

We will continue to compose and decompose numbers in more than one way as well as compare numbers up to 20.  We will learn addition strategies to help us solve addition problems.

Fun videos to watch with your child:

Science
We will predict and identify changes in materials caused by cooling and heating.

Social Studies

We will wrap up our first unit on rules/communities/citizenship by talking about the responsibilities of authority figures at home, school, and our community.

Great Information To Know

    • Please remember to send your child's Ipad to school every day.  Also, please make sure that it is charged every evening.  Thank you!!
    • Please make sure to look at your child's daily behavior calendar.  Our goal is for the children to color in the day with the appropriate behavior.  Many times, the children forget.  If it is not colored, please assume it is a great day.  If you see a teacher comment, we would love for you to have a conversation with your child about what happened to receive the comment.  Please know many warnings were given before a comment was written. :-)
    • Please review and take out all papers from their take-home folder each day.

    Teacher Emails

The best way to get in touch with your teacher is by email.  Please email the teacher that can best answer the subject of your question. If it is a general question, please email your homeroom teacher.

    School Lunches

Who can visit my child for lunch?

Starting October 13thevery Friday families are allowed to eat lunch in the cafeteria

District guidelines limit lunchroom visitors at the elementary level to parents, immediate family members with written permission from a parent, and campus mentors. Immediate family members are defined as the student’s parents/step-parents, siblings, grandparents, or any person residing in the home. A parent can list the person(s) who have permission to have lunch for the entire school year.  If anyone other than the parent(s) listed as guardians in our district e-school system is eating with the child, we will need written documentation of your approval.

    Dismissal

If you change the way your child goes home at the end of the day, please email your teacher.  Children will be sent home their "usual" way unless we hear directly from a parent.  Also, please make sure that the teacher has responded to your email to ensure that we got the message.  If you don't hear back from your teacher, please call the office to let them know about dismissal changes.

    Birthday Treats

We will celebrate your child’s birthday with a spotlight on our daily school-wide announcements and a goody bag from the school that contains several items, including a coupon for a free treat in the cafeteria.

If you choose to send birthday food treats to school, they will need to be in their original packaging that lists the ingredients.  Please send the treats to our school nurse.  She will look over the ingredients and then deliver them to your child's homeroom class.  These treats will be sent home with the learners at the end of the day for them to enjoy at home.

    Volunteering

If you think you would like to volunteer at TCE this year, please fill out the volunteer background check.  The sooner the better!  You can find information about how to fill out the form and the actual form on our TCE webpage. This needs to be done each. year.  You will need a background check to help in the classroom, field trips, field day, etc.

    Photos From The Week

    Science Investigations

First grade did a fabulous job using their five sense to describe their Oreo.

When I put the Oreo in my mouth, it feels like.....

    "My oreo feels bumpy"

    Big Smiles for Oreos!

    "My Oreo tastes yummy!"

As scientists, we record our investigations.

    Comparing Numbers

How can you decide if a number is greater than or less than another number?

"41 is greater than 3 tens because it has 1 more ten"

"2 tens is equal to 1 ten and 10 ones"

"I know that 42 is greater than 34 because 42 has more tens"

I know that 61 is greater than 50 because it has more tens and one more one."

    "12 is greater than 8"

"I  know that 2 tens and 1 one is greater than 2 tens."

"2 tens is equal to 1 ten and 10 ones."

"I know that 30 is less than 66 because 30 has fewer tens and fewer ones."

"51 is greater than 22 because it has more tens."

"I know that 10 tens and 10 ones is greater than 10 tens because 10 tens is equal to 100 and 10 tens and 10 ones is equal to 110.  That means 110 has more tens. "

    "
"I know that 2 tens and 10 ones is equal to 3 tens."

" I know that 1 ten is less than 101, which is 10 tens and 1 one."
