What will we be learning next week?

Language Arts

Reading:    We will continue our study of traditional tales.  We are enjoying reading and learning about Aesop's fables.

Writing:    We will continue our poetry unit.  We are talking about visualizing when reading a poem and how poems can make you feel.  We will be writing our own poems to include in our poetry folder.

Phonics/Grammar:  We will look at how silent /e/ changes the short vowel /u/ into the long vowel /u/ sound.  We will also be talking about verbs and how to look for them in our reading.

Unit 2 SNAP Words: big, eat, make, take, have, out, came, same, home, more, not, of, put, your, I'm, into, little, now, three, if, or, read.   **Your child should be able to read all of these words "in a snap".  If your child is having difficulty reading these, please help at home by making flashcards and going over them daily.

Reading at Home: Providing your child reading time each night, allows them the opportunity to practice their reading strategies and grow in fluency.

Math

We will review representing numbers in different ways as well as decompose and compose numbers in more than two ways.  For example, 100 is 1 hundred, 0 tens, 0 one or 100 is 10 tens or 9 tens and 10 ones. Learners will continue to use objects and pictorial models to solve and generate word problems involving joining, separating, and comparing sets within 20 and unknowns in problems such as

5 + 6 = ?
6 + ? = 11
5 = ? - 6

Math Activities to do with your child

Skip count by fives with your child to 120.

Have your child pick a two-digit number.  Ask them to tell you what is 10 more or 10 less.    Have a discussion with your child.  Here are some questions you can ask. What is one more and one less?  Is it even or odd?  How many tens does your number have?  Can you tell me the expanded form?  What digit is in one place, etc.?

Science
We will start our science unit on rocks and soil next week.  To get ready for this unit, please have your child collect some rocks to bring to school.  We will be looking at a large variety and sorting them by their different properties.  Please make sure that the rocks come to school in a ziplock bag.  We will use the rocks you bring for sorting activities so you might not receive the same rocks back.  Do not put any special rocks in the bag - only rocks you are willing to share with the class.
Social Studies

We will begin talking about customs and traditions.  Please look in your child's folder for an "at home" project about sharing your family's custom or tradition.  We can't wait to share these presentations with the class so we can discover each other's customs and traditions that they have with their family.  It is one of our favorite projects!! We love learning about our friends.  All projects are due on December 1st but your child may start bringing them to school the week after Thanksgiving.

Weekly Announcements

  • Please don't forget to charge your child's iPad nightly.

Great Information To Know

    • We are noticing more learners are coming without fully charged iPads. Please make sure you're charging them every night AND sending the charger to school each day! Thank you for your help with this!
    • Please make sure to look at your child's daily behavior calendar.  Our goal is for the children to color in the day with the appropriate behavior.  Many times, the children forget.  If it is not colored, please assume it is a great day.  If you see a teacher comment, we would love for you to have a conversation with your child about what happened to receive the comment.  Please know many warnings were given before a comment was written. :-)
    • Please review and take out all papers from their take-home folder each day.

    Teacher Emails

The best way to get in touch with your teacher is by email.  Please email the teacher that can best answer the subject of your question. If it is a general question, please email your homeroom teacher.

    School Lunches

Every Friday families are allowed to eat lunch in the cafeteria

District guidelines limit lunchroom visitors at the elementary level to parents, immediate family members with written permission from a parent, and campus mentors. Immediate family members are defined as the student’s parents/step-parents, siblings, grandparents, or any person residing in the home. A parent can list the person(s) who have permission to have lunch for the entire school year.  If anyone other than the parent(s) listed as guardians in our district e-school system is eating with the child, we will need written documentation of your approval.

    Dismissal

If you change the way your child goes home at the end of the day, please email your teacher.  Children will be sent home their "usual" way unless we hear directly from a parent.  Also, please make sure that the teacher has responded to your email to ensure that we got the message.  If you don't hear back from your teacher, please call the office to let them know about dismissal changes.

    Birthday Treats

We will celebrate your child’s birthday with a spotlight on our daily school-wide announcements and a goody bag from the school that contains several items, including a coupon for a free treat in the cafeteria.

If you choose to send birthday food treats to school, they will need to be in their original packaging that lists the ingredients.  Please send the treats to our school nurse.  She will look over the ingredients and then deliver them to your child's homeroom class.  These treats will be sent home with the learners at the end of the day for them to enjoy at home.

    Volunteering

If you think you would like to volunteer at TCE this year, please fill out the volunteer background check.  The sooner the better!  You can find information about how to fill out the form and the actual form on our TCE webpage. This needs to be done each. year.  You will need a background check to help in the classroom, field trips, field day, etc.
